A Day in the Market: Sourcing the Sweetest Dried Fruits for Our Snack Trays

It’s me — your resident snack queen and founder of letterly! Today I’m taking you behind the scenes on one of my favorite (and sometimes most unpredictable) parts of running this business: fruit tasting day.

Every so often, I carve out a day to visit a handful of my favorite farmers markets and small-batch vendors in search of new, exotic dried fruits to add to our gourmet trays. Think chewy mango, tart golden berries, candied citrus, and (my personal favorite) perfectly sweet dried strawberries.

I start early, coffee in hand, weaving through stalls bursting with vibrant colors and fragrant samples. At each booth, I talk to the growers and makers about their process—how the fruit is picked, dried, and sometimes even spiced or sweetened. Then comes the fun (and honestly, sometimes weird) part: I try everything.

Some fruits are a hard no for me — like dried kiwi that somehow tastes like sour socks, or ultra-tart gooseberries that make your face scrunch up for a solid five seconds. But when I come across something like sun-dried pineapple that tastes like a tropical vacation? Instant yes. And the dried strawberries? Always, always in. They're juicy, candy-sweet, and the perfect bite to balance the salty crunch of our roasted nuts and buttery popcorn.

At letterly, we’re incredibly picky about what makes it into our boxes. We hand-pack every single tray, so I want every ingredient to feel like it was picked with care — because it was. Sourcing from farmers market vendors and small producers means our ingredients aren’t just fresher—they’re filled with heart, story, and flavor you just can’t get from bulk suppliers.
